The National Employment Lawyers Association
Urges Bipartisan Senate Support For Tom Perez As Secretary Of Labor
(Washington, DC) – Patricia A. Barasch, President of the National Employment Lawyers Association, issued the following statement on the pending nomination of Tom Perez for Secretary of the Department of Labor:
"Tomorrow, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) is again scheduled to vote on the nomination of Tom Perez. NELA urges the Committee to carefully consider Mr. Perez's stellar credentials, put partisan attacks aside, and vote to report his nomination to the full Senate for swift consideration.
America's workers need a strong leader like Mr. Perez to ensure that laws—including those that protect each and every one of us against discrimination, misclassification, wage theft, and unsafe workplace conditions—are vigorously enforced. NELA applauds Mr. Perez's remarkable leadership at the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division in protecting the civilian job rights of our nation's returning service members and veterans by bringing a record number of cases to enforce the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).
America's employers want a strong leader like Mr. Perez, who has a proven track record of engaging all stakeholders in collaborative efforts that result in common sense solutions that balance job growth with protecting workers. Mr. Perez has been endorsed by employers and business groups that worked with him during his tenure as Maryland's Secretary of Labor, including the University System of Maryland and the 800-member Maryland Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Perez has repeatedly stated that his top priority will be 'jobs, jobs, jobs.' Clearly, job creation is a national priority and Mr. Perez is the best person to lead this effort. As the Maryland Chamber commented, 'Our experience bodes well for the Nation.'
NELA joins a wide, bipartisan coalition of public interest and business groups in urging the HELP Committee to support the nomination of Tom Perez. NELA urges the Senate HELP Committee to join us by adding their bipartisan support for Mr. Perez."
